Project Apis

The project aims to establish a safe and practical outdoor learning space where students and local community members can engage in hands-on beekeeping, learn about bees and pollinators, and build confidence through regular interaction with nature. It will address several barriers that often prevent people from getting involved in beekeeping, such as the cost of equipment, limited access to hives, lack of confidence, and uncertainty about where to start.

Funding will be used to set up a fully equipped community apiary, which will include two hives with colonies, protective clothing, essential beekeeping equipment, and support for training and mentoring. Project Apis CIC’s community apiary model is designed to provide access to beekeeping without the need for individuals to buy their own hives or equipment.

The project's objectives are to:

1. Create a long-term community apiary at East Norfolk Sixth Form College.
2. Provide free or accessible beekeeping opportunities for beginners.
3. Support confidence, well-being, routine, and social connections through practical outdoor activities.
4. Enhance understanding of honeybees, native pollinators, biodiversity, and responsible environmental actions.
5. Allow students and community members to learn new skills in a calm and supportive setting.
6. Create a visible local project that can continue beyond the grant period through the involvement of volunteers, partnerships, and future sponsorship.

This initiative is about more than just installing hives; it will foster a shared community learning space where people can gather, spend time outdoors, learn safely, and feel part of something positive. It aligns perfectly with Project Apis CIC’s broader mission of using beekeeping, pollinator education, and practical, nature-based activities to promote community connections, confidence, well-being, and environmental learning.
