In Tune Radio
Young people today can struggle to gain essential workplace life skills due to school systems that some young people find challenging, with rapid changes in technology and a lack of real-world work experience. This project directly addresses a charitable purpose by advancing education, promoting digital inclusion, and fostering the personal development of young people, some of whom may be disadvantaged due to their personal socioeconomic situation. The project provides structured, non-formal learning in media literacy, journalism, technical audio production, and communication. This goes far beyond standard school curricula.

Project Overview
Using our successful experience with the Scheme of Work developed for young people with Special Education Needs for the Marches Careers Hub, along with many years experience of training volunteers with no radio experience, we are offering an Introduction to Broadcast programme to train young people in broadcasting. They will gain valuable soft skills; communication, teamwork, problem solving, adaptability, time management and technical and creative skills. Each student will receive a certificate on completion, and those that wish to or who are selected, will go on to run our Saturday Radio Cub magazine style radio show as volunteers, a show by young people for young people.
Upskilling
The young people will be supported by trained youth workers in collaboration with All About Youth https://allaboutyouth.org.uk, youth workers from charity partners, and our own production team. The funding will enable the launch of the project and the investment in upskilling 40+ young people in small groups. Those that wish to, will have the opportunity to train to teach others, or become involved in other radio shows, and to explore careers in media and broadcasting.
Demographics
We wish to teach young people from Shropshire Telford and Wrekin who have no access to radio or any broadcasting experience, how to use the equipment, pre-record content, create identifiers etc. and plan shows. The project is open to all young people aged 16 to 25 and although Shropshire is generally considered a relatively affluent county, this overall wealth hides noticeable pockets of rural deprivation and lower-income areas.
Connecting Communities for Good
We envisage that we will be able to recruit 40 young people onto the introductory programme with £6650; we already receive direct enquiries of at least one volunteer request per week from someone under 25. In addition to this, we will be encouraging referrals from organisations, some of the following have requested this training for young people and some have already received this training and wish to place more young people; All About Youth https://allaboutyouth.org.uk, Shropshire Council enable programme https://www.enableservices.co.uk, The Hive https://www.hiveonline.org.uk, Sight Loss Shropshire https://sightlossshropshire.org.uk, 4All Foundation https://www.4all.foundation, Shrewsbury Town FC Foundation https://www.foundationstfc.co.uk, YMCA Wellington https://www.ymcawellington.co.uk and Community Resource Employment and Enterprise Project https://community-resource.org.uk/employability-and-enterprise-programme which can be a progression route for young people onto their Business Start Up programme for young entrepreneurs. The local representatives from the Youth Parliament, also want radio opportunities. We therefore anticipate strong interest in the project from a diverse range of young people, some with SEN and disabilities, living in deprived areas through to affluent areas of Shropshire.
