Alex Wish Duchenne Virtual Ward Project
Alex's Wish is a charity dedicated to conquering Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A progressive, life-limiting muscle-wasting disease that affects 1 in every 3,500 boys born. We are a family-run charity, set-up by Alex's parents 13 years ago after discovering there is not enough funding going into medical research to find treatments and a cure for those living with Duchenne in the UK.

Project Overview
Over the past 13 years, we have raised over £2.6 million and funded more than 40 projects. One notable achievement is our support for a project that has successfully brought a new approved drug to market for everyone living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We are making a significant impact by introducing new technologies to improve the quality of life and enhancing care standards across the UK.
Our ongoing focus is to raise funds and:
- Continue to drive better care standards for individuals living with Duchenne, regardless of where they live in the UK or whether they are children or adults.
- Invest in new technologies that support boys in living more independently.
- Fund innovation to bring vital new treatments to market for everyone living in the UK.
- Work towards finding a cure for all those affected by Duchenne.
Why are we crowdfunding
Men with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are living longer and enjoying more fulfilling lives, thanks to improvements in care. However, when they transition from pediatric to adult services, their care often falls short. We are committed to changing that.
We have joined forces with Duchenne UK, a charity founded by parents of boys living with Duchenne. Together, we are stronger and share the same values. We are raising funds for a three-year project to create a Virtual Hospital, where patients can access the best care across the UK.
Our total fundraising goal for this project is £80,000. This money will be raised through various fundraising events we are organising, as well as from trusts and foundations, including this crowdfunding page.
**How We’ll Spend the Money Raised**
The funds collected will support this three-year project for the new Virtual Ward, which promises to deliver the following benefits to patients:
- Reduce fragmentation of care, decrease urgent hospital admissions, and lower the frequency of premature mortality.
- Improve the quality of life for adults with Duchenne by minimising travel burdens and enhancing overall health and well-being.
- Enhance communication between specialists, leading to improved quality of care.
- Provide training to local healthcare teams.
Alex Wish will be hosting its annual ball in November, and we plan to use Crowdfunder to sell our raffle tickets. Our goal is to raise over £1,500 from ticket sales on the night, which will be match-funded, helping us reach our target of £7,000.
